For the past several months we've {I mean Chandler has} been working towards earning his Eagle. As many of you know, this is no easy feat. We left it completely up to Chan to find a project that interested him.
After many google searches, contemplating and asking around, he decided to go with a Bicycle Drive. He called the Utah Bicycle Collective, found out what was involved, and jumped right in.
The mission of the Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective is to promote cycling as an effective and sustainable form of transportation and as a cornerstone of a cleaner, healthier, and safer society.
The Bicycle Collective provides refurbished bicycles and educational programs to the community, focusing on children and lower income households. Go HERE to learn more.
Chandler along with the Young Men in our ward passed out 200 flyers and collected around 40 bikes just from our neighborhood.
Last night the Young Men gathered at our house to load the bikes on a trailer and take them to their new home. Thankfully our friend had a giant trailer and all 40 bikes fit perfectly.
Joe and I drove separately so we could get all the boys there. I think we all felt really good when we walked inside to see what we were about to do. There were literally bikes EVERYWHERE! Hanging from the ceiling, piled high in corners, some in pieces, some ready to be given away. It was an amazing set-up. The Bicycle Collective is such a unique and awesome place to visit.
The boys each picked a station to work at and selected a bike they wanted to fix. Our job was to fix and patch flat tires. Most of the boys had no clue how to do this, so it was a good learning experience as well. Thankfully Joe knows a lot about bikes and went back and forth from station to station helping them.
The boys were so proud of the bikes they fixed and wanted to test them out by riding them around the store. It was really fun to see them so excited. They all agreed afterward that they had a great time and that this project was really COOL.
Lastly, we had to end our night at Nelson's Frozen Custard.... Yummers! It was great to see the younger boys work right along with the older boys. We're talking 7th graders and Sophmores working together. They had such a great time and I think they bonded because of it. Chandler couldn't stop hugging everyone and thanking them for helping!
Here are the pictures I took in no particular order. As part of an Eagle Scout Project, it's important to document your entire project as you go. I think we covered the picture portion.

So glad you could fit all the bikes on the trailer and didn't need our help. Dad's call lasted over an hour so it would have been difficult. Anyway, glad it went well and he's FINALLY done! Now we have to worry about him driving.
